A report from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has given a stark warning about the state of the nation's health.
Lack of regular exercise is estimated to cost the UK economy £20bn a year and yet 27% of UK adults do less than 30 minutes of exercise a week in total, putting them at risk of developing a chronic health condition and well as shortening life expectancy.
The report estimates that by encouraging their patients to take moderate exercise five times a week, doctors could shave 15% off the NHS's annual healthcare’s budget and a further 15% off the social care budget.
Regular exercise has been proven to reduce the risks of developing dementia, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and heart disease by least 30%. So, perhaps it's time for us all to get on our bikes.
